Dream journal, a more detailed look.
Having a dream diary for lucid dreaming is very important as it allows you to record your dreams and read them later. this can help you find your dream signs, and realise what your dreams are trying to tell you.
The other reason is that The more you record your dreams, the more you'll increase chances of becoming lucid.
The diary itself.
The diary itself can just be a simple notepad, but make sure there is space to write down a large dream, without spreading it over too many pages. An A4 size notepad is the best, one with lines on one side of the page then blank space on the other, so that if you need to draw something, you can.

Make sure your pen is working properly, nothing worse than waking up after an amazing dream, reaching for the pen to write it down, then finding out the pens run out of ink. By the time you've got up, realised how cold your room now is, searched for another pen, got back to your bed, you may have forgotten the dream.
Alternatively, you could use a Pencil ;)
Right now onto the more important stuff.
Dream signs, highlighters, references and dates.
With your dream diary, it's very useful to have some coloured highlighters to use after you've written the dream down, to highlight important parts of the dream, concentrate on places, names, specific shapes, small objects you may find, symbols, and the weather to start with.
What you want to look for are things that are related to each other, maybe across several different dreams and over a period of time, not always in the same dream.
these things might be what are called 'Dream Signs' Things that repeat in a number of dreams and in different forms, could be a number of things.
They could be things your subconscious mind is trying to bring to your attention, or something you need to change about yourself, They could be parts of your mind that are trying to tell you something.
Whatever their purpose is for you, it's important to recognise them because they can be the easiest way of becoming lucid. Specially if they're things that you only see or experience while in a dream.
Computerised Dream Journals.
This is more advanced, and unless you're serious about lucid dreaming and very interested in it, this probably isn't needed.
When you start dreaming more and more, and have larger dreams, more detailed story lines to write down and more things going on in your dreams, it might be worth making a document on your computer for this.
Having a document instead of, or as well as a dream diary is good because it means you can instantly search for specific words across a large number of dreams and it'll instantly show you where and when that dream was. This is much easier for you than flicking through hundreds of pages of scrawled dream notes to find where you had the same symbol show up in your dreams.
